Changes to paternity leave are coming: What it means for you

Government reforms will allow fathers and partners more flexibility in how and when partnernity leave is taken.

Changes to paternity leave, including how and when it can be taken, are expected to come into effect in April.

The Government has published its draft legislation for reform to paternity rights. The Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024 plans to introduce the following changes:

    • Those taking paternity leave will now be able to take it in two separate blocks of one week, rather than two weeks together.
    • The leave shall be available for the first 52 weeks following birth, rather than within 56 days of birth as is currently the position.
    • Notice for taking leave will be reduced from 15 weeks to just 28 days.

The Regulations are due to come into effect from 6 April 2024, and reflect a changing attitude towards work-life balance and gender equality.

The changes were first outlined by Government in June 2023, and followed a consultation on parental leave and pay.
