Hang out with Hamers: Mary Thompson

In our latest 'Hang out with Hamers' feature, we're catching up with our Conveyancing Assistant, Mary Thompson.

At Hamers, providing friendly, local law services is our specialty. We cut through the legal jargon to offer you a personal, hassle-free experience.

To help you get to know our team better, we launched our ‘Hang out with Hamers’ series.

In this series, we introduce you to members of the team across various departments.

Today, we’re catching up with Mary Thompson, Conveyancing Assistant.

    Q) Tell us about your role at Hamers – what does a typical day look like?

I work in the residential department and no two days are the same. My main jobs include scanning documents, taking phone calls, liaising with clients and dictation.

I am also completing a Level 3 Business Administration course alongside my day-to-day work, and have online studying and coursework.

I enjoy learning and want to continue expanding my knowledge. The team at Hamers have been really encouraging and I feel it will be a great place to continue progressing in my career.

    Q) What do you enjoy most about your job?

My colleagues are definitely the best part of the job. We all get along really well and everyone is so helpful and supportive. It’s a really nice community to work in.

As I’m doing an apprenticeship, everyone has also been really supportive of my training and they’ve made accommodations to ensure I can complete my studying alongside work.

    Q) Tell me one thing people wouldn’t expect about working for a law firm.

It’s definitely not as strict as you might think, it’s quite a laidback environment in the office.

It’s still very professional, especially when we are dealing with clients but it’s also very friendly, collaborative and supportive.

    Q) What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

Most of my time outside of work is spent gaming. I own every console and I particularly enjoy playing classic or horror games.

My favourite console to play on right now is probably the Xbox but my favourite overall is the Play Station 2.

    Q) What’s one thing your colleagues wouldn’t know about you?

I’m really good at sudoku! I’ve just got a knack for it. I’ve discovered that I’m actually faster than 90 per cent of sudoku players.

    Quick-fire Questions

    Q) You can invite any three people – dead or alive – to dinner. Who’s at the table?

Firstly I’d say the actors Sigourney Weaver and Kate Beckinsale. I’m a big fan of the Alien movies and the Underworld series so I’d like to meet both of them.

My third choice would be the composer Mick Gordon, who has composed soundtracks for some of my favourite video games.

    Q) Favourite TV show?

It would be between the Vampire Diaries or Brooklyn 99.

    Q) What’s the best place you’ve been on holiday?

I’ve actually never been abroad but the best place I’ve been to is probably Scotland. If I did have the chance to go abroad I’d really like to go to Scandanavia.

    Q) Early bird or night owl?

    I’m a night owl.

    Q) If you could win an Olympic gold medal in any sport, what would it be?

Pole vaulting. I think it’s really impressive to look at so I’d like to be able to do that!
