Making a will, planning for later life or putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place are all important decisions, but they can also feel a bit daunting. Most people simply want to know they’re doing the right thing for themselves and their family, and having the right legal advice can help them make those decisions with confidence.
Loren McDermott, Partner at Hamers Solicitors, is an Accredited Lifetime Lawyer through The Association of Lifetime Lawyers. The accreditation recognises lawyers who specialise in helping people plan for the future and supporting families through some of life’s more difficult moments.
As part of the accreditation, Lifetime Lawyers complete specialist training and ongoing professional development to ensure they understand the challenges clients may face. This includes recognising the signs of abuse or neglect, as well as understanding the impact of conditions such as dementia and the practical issues that can come with hearing, sight or mobility problems.
Loren said: “For many people, making a will or putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place isn’t something they’ve done before, so it’s important they feel comfortable asking questions and understand the options available to them. Taking the time to get to know our clients means we can give advice that’s right for their individual circumstances.”
This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Association of Lifetime Lawyers. Since 1996, it has worked to improve access to specialist legal advice for older and vulnerable people, while campaigning alongside government, legal bodies and charities to ensure their interests are properly represented.
She added: “I’m proud to be part of an organisation that shares the same approach we have at Hamers. A lot of people tell us they’ve been meaning to get around to making a will or sorting out a Lasting Power of Attorney for years. Once it’s done, they almost always say they wish they’d done it sooner.”
Loren McDermott and the team are always happy to talk through your options, explain everything clearly and help you put the right plans in place for you and your family.
